Hong Kong’s First Social Enterprise Providing Inclusive and Diverse Life & Death Services and Education for Marginalised Communities

We cannot avoid death, nor can we predict when it will come. Yet, we can plan and prepare for our death early, and face death with autonomy and dignity.

In Hong Kong, end-of-life planning can be especially challenging for those whose identities, relationships, or wishes are not fully acknowledged by traditional systems.

As Hong Kong’s first social enterprise offering inclusive one-stop end-of-life services, Alongside is committed to promoting lifelong autonomy. We believe that everyone, regardless of background, identity, gender, sexual orientation, or life stage, should have the right to make their own choices and plan every step of their life journey.

Life-long Autonomy

Personal autonomy is a cornerstone of modern society. Laws and institutions should reflect and respect each individual’s will, not only when we are healthy, but especially when we are no longer able to clearly express our wishes.

When we lose the ability to make decisions for ourselves, critical life choices are made according to default mechanisms set by existing laws and systems. However, these default decisions often fail to reflect our personal values or life preferences. For marginalized communities, especially gender and sexual minorities, current legal frameworks frequently overlook their unique needs and relationship structures, making it more likely that their wishes will be neglected in medical decisions or end-of-life arrangements. That is why it is essential to leave clear instructions in advance through effective legal tools, to ensure that our choices are respected and upheld.

At Alongside, we believe that everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, financial means, or social status, deserves the right to lifelong autonomy. As such, we are committed to providing non-discriminatory, one-stop end-of-life planning services. With the support of a professional network and a transparent, competitively priced service model, we empower each person to plan their future with clarity and confidence so they can face the unknown without fear, and live each day with peace of mind.

Financial Autonomy

Wills

By creating a will, you can ensure that your estate is distributed according to your wishes, safeguarding the people you care about. Additionally, appointing a trusted individual as the executor of your will can guarantee that your personal funeral preferences are respected and carried out.

Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA)

Establishing an enduring power of attorney allows you to designate a trusted person (the Attorney) to manage your financial affairs in situations where you might lose mental capacity, such as during a coma following a traffic accident or an illness that impairs your ability to make decisions. This includes responsibilities like supporting parents, handling medical bills, making mortgage payments, or covering pet care costs.

Medical Autonomy

Advance Medical Directive

By setting up an advance medical directive, you can document your healthcare preferences in scenarios like irreversible comas, vegetative states, or terminal illnesses. This ensures that your wishes are known and respected by a trusted person, allowing you to maintain dignity in life’s final journey.

Funeral Autonomy

In collaboration with funeral service providers who are LGBTQIA+ friendly, we offer a range of services including pre-death funeral planning, assistance with home passings, and personal belongings management.

Alongside works in tandem with the executors to ensure these plans are carried out according to your wishes.

Lifelong Autonomy,
from beginning to end.
